It's difficult to remember, especially when we have an attachment to a critter, that the survival rate of young animals is frequently very low, even with the best of care. Perhaps the parents were struggling to find food for themselves, let alone for the young birds. Adults choose their own survival over their offspring with the hopes that their survival will lead to numerous additional nesting attempts down the road. In a sense, it's sacrificing the few so that many more can live. That’s too bad.
